Associate Pastor/Minister of Students

General Purpose

 

The Associate Pastor/Minister of Students is to give oversight to the student ministry (birth—college) of Buffalo Trail Baptist Church. The main area of focus will be students grade 6-12 while collaborating with the other student ministry areas. This position will also assist the pastor in various roles as outlined in the job description.

 

Supervision

 

The Associate Pastor/Minister of Students shall be directly responsible to the Pastor.

Qualifications

  1. The Associate Pastor/Minister of Students position shall be filled with someone of Christian belief and character. This person shall adhere to and fully support the Baptist Faith & Message 2000, as well as, the pastoral qualifications as listed in 1 Timothy 3:1-7. This person shall also be able to give testimony to his salvation experience, call to ministry and philosophy of ministry.

  2. The Associate Pastor/Minister of Students shall be someone who is passionate about Jesus and Youth.

  3. The Associate Pastor/Minister of Students should possess such qualities as being teachable, humble, genuine, outgoing, kind, approachable, encouraging and hardworking.

  4. An undergraduate degree with some form of theological training (seminary, Bible College, formal mentorship while serving in a ministry setting) is required. The person in this role will be encouraged to continue in pursuit of educational goals that will enhance his ability to serve the students and their families.

  5. It is preferred that the Associate Pastor/Minister of Students be ordained or receptive to ordination.

  6. The Associate Pastor/Minister of Students should be capable of casting and implementing a vision for the youth ministry. This will involve creating, planning, organizing and executing such a plan to reach youth and to disciple them in their Christian growth.

  7. Maintain a constant and growing personal relationship with the Lord through private daily devotions, leadership conferences, seminars, collaboration with other student pastors/leaders and other such opportunities for personal and professional growth.

  8. The Associate Pastor/Minister of Students shall support the vision and ministries of BTBC.

 

Minister of Students Responsibilities

 

The primary goal of this ministry position is to introduce students (grades 6-12) to Christ, disciple them and train them to serve and share Christ.

The Minister of Students will:

  1. Organize and lead effective youth programs implementing fellowship, worship, biblical teaching, discipleship and evangelism, as well as ministry and mission opportunities.

  2. Plan, coordinate and schedule youth activities which are a part of the regular church activities (Sunday School, Wednesday Night Bible Study, etc.) and those that are extended youth activities (retreats, fellowships, outreach, mission trips, etc.)

  3. Seek to build relationships with the students and within the community by attending local school functions such as but not limited to: athletic events, graduation ceremonies, dramatic productions, concerts for students grades 6-12.

  4. Seek to develop appropriate relationships with the youth, maintaining open lines of communications.

  5. The Minister of Students will maintain an active and appropriate social media presence to increase visibility for community outreach.

  6. Enlist, train and background check leadership for the Youth Ministry.

  7. Develop leadership ability in youth.

  8. Maintain contact with students and parents, keeping them informed of ongoing activities. Keep parents updated on ministry strategies and plans in a way that encourages partnership and involvement.

  9. Prepare an annual budget for the youth ministry and submit to the Finance Committee and administer and manage the approved budget.

  10. Follow up with families who have visited the church.

  11. Visit hospitalized youth or family members and follow up during recovery.

  12. Provide biblical counseling to youth and their family members referring them to professional counselors when necessary.

 

Associate Pastor Responsibilities

  1. Fill in when the pastor is ill, out of town, on vacation or as the pastor requests.

    • Handle emergencies when the pastor is out of the office.

    • Preach/teach/lead services at the pastor's direction.

  2. Support the pastor in carrying out the ministry of BTBC, help as needed with administrative tasks, special projects and campaigns, teaching, etc.

  3. Be involved with outreach to guests (especially to youth and their families), visitation to church members (especially to youth and their families), and others as might be requested by the pastor.

  4. Visit hospitalized members (especially youth and their families) and follow up during their recovery.

    • Hospital visitation may involve a day during the week as the pastor takes a day off.

  5. Provide Biblical counseling to church members regarding spiritual matters. Refer to professional counselors as necessary. This may be primarily for youth and their families but it is not just limited to this section of the church family.

  6. Be available to conduct funerals and weddings as requested.

  7. Pray for the pastor and other staff members, volunteer workers, members and the church as a whole.

 

Minister of Students Responsibilities to Nursery Coordinator, Children's Ministry Director and College/Career Ministry:

  1. The Minister of Students will consult with the Nursery Coordinator and Children's Ministry Director concerning best practices for their particular area of ministry.

  2. The Minister of Students can provide input for the Children's Ministry Director as to ministry that will prepare the children to transition from children's ministry into the youth ministry.

  3. The Minister of Students can provide input for those who serve the college and career students as they graduate out of the youth group but still need guidance and direction during this season of life.

    • This might include working with the Walters' State Community College Baptist Collegiate Ministry to plug students into college ministry on campus and to inquire if there are college students on campus that need to be connected to church.

    • It would also be beneficial for the Minister of Students to encourage and stay in contact with our graduates from youth group as they move into college/university/trade school settings or step into the work force.

 

Salary and Benefits

 

Salary and benefits will be based on education and experience.

This job description is not intended to be exhaustive in nature and scope but to set expectations and offer guidelines that will assist the student ministry of BTBC in preparing the next generation to carry out the Great Commission guided by the Great Commandment. There may be other tasks and ministry opportunities that will be requested by the pastor.
